Philosophy of the company

Our motto “We deal with animals like with people” reflects our philosophy. Actual level of veterinary medicine does not allow one doctor to grasp all fields, so our doctors specialize themselves in a specific discipline. Cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology and urology are our main branches of medicine. We work as a team concurrently and so particular cases are soluted by all specialists together.

We emphasize the use of modern diagnostic and therapeutic devices and the cooperation with renowned foreign companies (IDEXX, Laboklin). We operate as the teaching unit for the University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno.

We strive to provide our services at the highest possible level. We consider our clients as active partners in the pet care. Therefore we try to explain them the health problem of their pets correctly and clearly.

This work is our hobby at the same time and we hope it can guarantee your satisfaction.

Services we offer :

Older animals and breeds of animals affected by inherited defects are the main target groups of this profession. Preventive diagnosis with the goal of recovery of animal breedings is our major aim in the second group.

The diagnosis of the heart failure and its medicament influence, just as the diagnosis of the particular heart diseases, which can cause the heart failure, are the content of the work of cardiology. Myxomatous atrioventricular valvular degeneration (MVD/Endocardiosis), congenital heart diseases (Aortic Stenosis, Pulmonic Stenosis, Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), Ventricular Septal Defect….) and cardiomyopathies (Hypertrofic Cardiomyopathy in cats (HCM), Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) and Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC) in large breed dogs) belong to the most often diseases.  Myocardial infarction, which is well known from the human medicine, is not obvious in the veterinary medicine.

Veterinary cardiology has made a big progress recently, which relates to the huge development in the human cardiology. It comes through the routine introduction of the echocardiography including the Doppler examination, the improvement of the X-ray examination, the introduction of the pressure measurement, the use of laboratory diagnosis. We cannot miss out the electrocardiography examination for the irreplaceable diagnosis of arrhythmias, just as 24hours monitoring of the cardiac rhythm by the Holter device. Surgical intervention like insertion of a pacemaker or widening of stenotic valves by balloon dilatation is also available.

We have to realize that it is impossible to cure completely almost any cardiac disease in dogs and cats. However, we are able to reach an important prolongation of their lives by giving them appropriate medicaments, despite the fact that the disease is still present in the body.

Cardiology is one of the main disciplines in our hospital. And so we try to use the latest diagnostics as well as contemporary treatments. The main guarantor of this discipline is MVDr. Karel Najman. MVDr.Monika Blažková is also dedicated to cardiology and MVDr. Hanuš Velebný performs surgical procedures on the heart.

Dermatology is a branch of medicine which deals with skin and skin’s derivates. Pathologic changes of skin can show a skin disease just as it can manifest a disease of the whole body. The protagonist who has been developing this field is MVDr. Jaroslava Šeflová. She prescribes mainly in Veterinary ambulance Tererova, but you can reach her also in Veterinary hospital Zahradní Město certain days of the week.

We offer following examinations:

Laboratory cytology, skin scrapings for confirmation of skin parasites or fungal disease, cultivation of fungus, skin allergic test, allergic antibodies examination from blood, determination of  hormone’s  level in blood, skin biopsy.

We are here for you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We can stabilize the patient in shock and also to solve the acute problem of your animal immediately. We are able to guarantee these services also during nights, weekends and public holiday.

We can treat animals with acute injuries, most often after falling from window (especially in cats), after biting by other animal or after hit by a car. We perform an urgent surgery in case of gastric torsion in dogs (known as GDV –Gastric dilatation/volvulus), we can do a Caesarean section in case of parturition stopped for various reasons, etc.. You can visit us also when worsens chronic disease of your animal suddenly or whenever you feel that your animal is not in good health condition.

All doctors from our team are able to provide acute surgery or establish the diagnosis, especially thanks to the experiences and modern equipment of our hospital.

Endocrinology is a discipline which deals with glands with internal secretion. We can first notice nonspecific clinical signs like falling behind the body growth, weariness,  increased appetite, losing weight while the appetite is normal, elevated water consumption, frequent  urinating, various skin problems or neurologic signs, because almost all hormones of the body participate in the energetic metabolism of the body.

We can make a diagnosis and set an adequate treatment in case of these diseases:

  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing syndrome)
  • Hypoadrenocorticsm (Addison disease)
  • Thyroid gland disturbances (Hypo and Hyperthyroidism)
  • Hyperparathyroidism
  • Sexual hormones disorder

The main expert for this discipline is MVDr. Tomáš Fiala. He specializes in internal medicine with a narrower focus on endocrinology, hematology, oncology and urology.

Diseases of digestive system (it means oral cavity, esophagus, gaster, intestines and also liver and pancreas) manifest themselves mostly by vomiting and diarrhea. Vomiting can also be a clinical sign of disablement of another organ system like kidney, uterus, etc… Terrible diarrheas can be life threatening especially for young and old individuals.

This discipline uses for the determination of the diagnosis an X-ray examination, ultrasound, biochemical analysis of blood and an examination by an endoscope. We use special endoscopes which allow us to screen a digestive system in the puppy with bodyweight of 800 grams as well as the Great Dane with 70 kilograms.

If you encounter difficulties mentioned above, please contact MVDr. Michal Alexa. He pays particular attention to diseases of the digestive tract and respiratory system. He is a specialist in endoscopic examinations.

We have prepared two rooms with safety and spacious hutches for our patients. One room is determined for internal and surgical patients and the second one is stated for infectious patients. Two hutches are also available for oxygen supplementation. Every hutch is equipped by an infusion pump, warming pad, clean blanket and bowls for water and food (if therapy does not prohibit it).

One doctor and one nurse are both responsible for hospitalized animals every day, every moment. They are responsible for monitoring of patients and proper management of the therapy as well as for the comfort of animals. Patients are regularly walking and they are also cuddled by the staff. Almost all nurses own some pet at home and so they are used to take care of them properly, delicately and with sincere love (just as doctors of course [Symbol])

We provide immediate evaluations:

  • Complete blood count + White blood cells differential
  • Biochemistry
  • Blood gas and ion analysis
  • Serological diagnosis of some serious diseases
  • Urinanalysis

Cytological diagnosis has been developed over many years in our workplace. Therefore we are able to quickly decide and find an optimal solution. We use these findings in surgery (detection and distinction of neoplastic and inflammatory processes), acute medicine (diagnosis of origin of the effusion), preventive medicine, etc..

We also investigate samples for other veterinary clinics and ambulances.

Neurology is a discipline which deals with diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, muscles and their supporting structures. We offer quality clinical work based on long-standing experience and on the amount of treated animals. We have rich experience with X-ray diagnosis, including also contrast studies. Our hospital is one of two workplaces which have the use of making electro diagnosis. We are able to take and screen cerebrospinal fluid. We can provide with muscles and nerves biopsy. We are going to start up a CT examination in the near future. The guarantor of neurology is MVDr. Hanuš Velebný, one of the owners of this company.

Visit us in case you observe following clinical signs on your animal:

limping, paralysis of limbs, weakness, nonspecific soreness, head inclination, collapse, disorientation, deafness, epilepsy, face paralysis, behavior disorder.

We ensure a total ophthalmology service in our department. MVDr. Petr Gbelec is a leading specialist for the ophthalmologic patients. He has been doing this profession since 1997. That year he (together with MVDr. Karel Najman) established our hospital.

We offer following examinations:

  • Diagnosis of the ocular surface diseases – chronic inflammation of the conjunctiva, irregular growth of eyelashes, corneal ulceration, abnormal eyelid, Dry eye syndrome (KCS)
  • Diagnosis and therapy of – inflammation inside the eye (uveitis), increased ocular pressure (glaucoma), disturbances in the opacity of the lens (cataract surgery), acute situations like trauma of the eye, perforation of the eye, lens luxation, acute glaucoma
  • Establishing of blindness in cooperation with neurology department (MVDr. Hanuš Velebný)
  • Surgery – congenital defects (dermoids etc.), eyelids adjustment, solution of corneal defects (corneal plastics),  removing of bleary lenses
  • Evaluation of inherited and congenital defects of the eyes. MVDr. Petr Gbelec is the member of Czech Committee for Hereditary Eye Diseases and he is certified for examination of HED

We have noticed a huge progress in veterinary oncology during recent few years. These changes allow animals to prolong their very good lives without suffering, or they can even be cured completely. Some neoplastic processes which are connected with high malignity in human patients behave differently in animals. Therefore veterinary medicine can help in almost all oncologic diagnoses.

We offer following possibilities in the fight against cancer:

  • Determine oncologic diagnosis
  • Propound an optimal therapy
  • Curative surgical methods based on long-time experience, possibility to refer patients into the radiation workplace (University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna)
  • Achievement of the remission using chemotherapy in hematoncologic processes
  • Postoperative and palliative chemotherapy

The main expert for this discipline is MVDr. Tomáš Fiala. He specializes in internal medicine with a narrower focus on endocrinology, hematology, oncology and urology.

Respiratory system

The treatment of patients with respiratory problems is one of the pivotal branch of our practice. MVDr. Michal Alexa and MVDr. Karel Najman are the main guarantors of this discipline.

Correct diagnosis should be the basis of quality treatment. We have a long-term experience with X-ray and endoscopic diagnosis of respiratory diseases. We use the latest imaging technique for endoscopic examinations, which allows us to work with small and also large patients. We could not establish a definitive diagnosis without our quality laboratory facilities, which is used for immediate blood gas analysis and for cytological assessment of samples taken during endoscopy.

Visit us in case your animal presents some of the bellow mentioned clinical signs:

Exercising intolerance, changes in animal’s voice – like noisy breathing accompanied by snoring or wheezing, cough, discharge from the nose of different character, dyspnea

We specialize in complex procedures in the soft tissue surgery and we are specially interested in neurosurgery (MVDr.Hanuš Velebný) and ophthalmosurgery (MVDr.Petr Gbelec)

 It includes:

  • intrathoracic surgery (congenital heart defects – Patent ductus arteriosus, Persistent right aortic arch, Persistent right arteria subclavia…)
  • complicated procedures in abdominal surgery (Portosystemic shunt…)
  • solution of intrathoracic and intraabdominal tumors
  • solution of urinary problems in cats (Feline lower urinary tract syndrome)
  • spinal neurosurgery
  • cataract surgery, corneal plastics

We provide elementary orthopedic operations, for example the solution of ruptured cruciate ligament or uncomplicated fractures (MVDr.Hanuš Velebný and MVDr.Martin Daníček)

We volunteer both – routine operations like castrations, removal of mammary tumors, lipomas excision, as well as the acute intervention (see Emergency).

Urology belongs to a specialization which we have supported for a long time. It is one of the pillars of our internal medicine. We offer a complex view on problems with urinary ways and connected organs. Increased water consumption, frequent urination, painful urination, urination with blood, anorexia,  exhaustion, vomiting, bad breath, small ulcers in the mouth, faster breathing, neurologic signs like tremor, backache, etc. we consider as typical clinical signs which respond to urinary tract disease.

It is important to bring fresh urine for the first examination of the urinary system. The amount of urine should be approximately 5 ml. The owner should also know the amount of water intake consumed by the animal during the day and behavior of the animal during the process of urination. The patient would not urine at least 4 hours before the examination.

We offer following services:

  • Diagnosis of kidney diseases in early stage
  • Differentiation the condition of increased water consumption and frequent urination
  • Management and prognosis in kidney’s failure
  • Inherited urinary tract disorders solution
  • Incontinence of urine solution
  • Solutions of the disease of lower urinary tract in cats (known as FeLUTD), which can be caused by uroliths, urinary tract infection, anatomic abnormalities, trauma, neurologic disorders,  neoplasia or idiopathic
  • Diagnosis of diseases of prostate gland

The main expert for this discipline is MVDr. Tomáš Fiala. He specializes in internal medicine with a narrower focus on endocrinology, hematology, oncology and urology.
